So this month we’re doing a series titled, “One Month to Live…what matters most?”. Don’t worry, I am not in need of death therapy counseling. I am however excited about the prospects of making our students and parents think about the bottom line; What matters most! So I along with our students, I made a list of 20ish things I value most in life. Reading some of the things our students wrote was simultaneously humorous and frightful. Leaders of tomorrow, what?
The point of this series is to get us to see the need to pursue what matters most in life. Upon purging my own list of twenty something values from things like installing a Mountain Dew dispenser in my house & coaching a MLB team for a week, it boiled down to a handful of things that are important. The kind of things that hold value to me. Relationships with people. Sure, we’d all like to fulfill some wild fantasy before we die like bungee jumping, sky diving or hanging out with Bear Grylls for a day, but what truly matters most to you?
For me, it meant spending more time with people that I have a deep relationship with or turning up the heat towards causes about which I’m passionate. I know that if we could see the final grains of sand approaching the middle of the hour glass, we’d determine to live fervently with passion. We’d define our one month values and chase after them with intention. As I’ve been sharing with our students, we won’t become motivated to accomplish this until it becomes specific!
The truth is we don’t pay attention to where we are going when we’re riding in the car. It’s only when we get behind the wheel do we suddenly pay attention to the details of directions & street names. It becomes specific and therefore motivating. So ask yourself…. what matters most… and do something about it!
